Tricky Road Junction Proves Challenging

02/04/2013

The difficult and potentially hazardous site conditions were only part of the story on this recent contract. The specification requirements meant having bespoke cast ironwork manufactured for new railings as well as the removal and refurbishment of the original Victorian railings.

As Alan Croft, Site Agent for Lumsden and Carroll Construction explains...

We undertook a highways project in the heart of Darlington on behalf of Darlington Borough Council (DBC). Middleton Forge were appointed as our fencing Contractor to undertake the installation of boundary fencing to the site, visibility railings within traffic islands, the renovation of Victorian guard-railing and the installation of wrought iron railings behind newly constructed retaining walls.

Having worked with Middleton Forge in the past, our site team were pleased that the company had been appointed to undertake the works in Darlington. This was due to the complex and constricted nature of the works to be undertaken.

Due to the meticulous demeanour of our Site Agent and indeed the keen eye of the DBC Clerk of Works, the necessity for the utmost quality was required from Middleton Forge. They did not let us down and as it turned out the biggest critic of their work was actually themselves. In particular Andrew Gleave and Neil Wallace maintained very high standards on site rectifying any minor defects immediately. The approach from the men with regards to health and safety was commendable as was the willingness to complete the project on time. Special appreciation is given for the works on restoring the Victorian railing which provided an extremely impressive finish to the overall scheme.

The way in which the Middleton Forge works were organised to suit our extremely constricted programme was excellent, especially considering the little amount of notice given at times from ourselves. Special thanks go to Neil Wallace and Andrew Gleave for their proactive nature, attention to detail and co-operation throughout the scheme. We hope to continue this good relationship in many projects to come
