Raby Castle Roof Cowls Recreated


Raby Estates recently replaced the roof of their coach house in the grounds of Raby Castle in County Durham, the home of Lord Barnard. We were approached by Philip Dent, the Estate Building Manager, about the feasibility of re furbishing the original roof cowls which had been in place since the late nineteenth century. It became apparent that the originals were beyond repair and that replacement was the only option. Neil and Skilled Fabricator Peter Walton set to work on the geometrical design of components based on measurements taken from the originals. The finished cowls were powder coated to a colour close to the original and installed by Raby estates to add the finishing touch to their new roof.

We asked Philip what he thought of the finished job and he gave the following brief but gratifying reply:
