Back in 2015 we reported our involvement in the building of a new accident and emergency hospital at Cramlington. The work carried out was diverse and included motorway specification parapet railings, retaining walls, and vehicle safety fencing as well as the more "run of the mill" fencing, gates and initial temporary security fencing and hoardings. We recently secured an order for further work at the hospital from new client James Hastings Ltd, following a recommendation. The work involved the manufacture, supply and installation of estate railings as part of their installation of a new pedestrian walkway. We are pleased to say that we made a good first impression with installers Andrew Gleave and Trevor James singled out for praise by James Hastings.

We have been involved in the construction of a new premium canopy at Newcastle International Airport on behalf of main contractor BCE Northern Ltd. It was a technically challenging project with strict engineering tolerances, which were necessary to ensure subsequent glazing and roof construction were as trouble-free as possible. In spite of a few complications along the way, close co-operation between the MF team, led by Operational Manager David Longstaff, and BCE staff helped achieve a visually impressive addition to this busy airport.

BCE’s Managing Director, Adrian Barton, had this to say…

"We are proud to have delivered this impressive architecturally appealing structure to enhance the entrance for visitors to the international airport.

Our long standing working relationship with the team at Middleton Forge and proactive approach from the design detailing to the installation have contributed greatly to the success of this project."

We began work on the this project for Robertson Construction in October 2017 by installing site hoarding and gates. So far so normal. The permanent fencing and gates however were to a complex design required by B&M to act as a 4.8m high security barrier combined with wind protection for stock contained in the oudoor retail area. This involved multiple layers of security mesh sandwiching 'flat wrap' razor wire and a wind break fabric. We also installed more run of the mill armco barriers.

We have worked with Robertsons Project Manager, Neil Metcalf, many times over the years and he had this to say about our efforts at the Northumberland Retail Park...

"We have a long established and successful relationship with Middleton Forge and this latest project was more complex than most. However, the Middleton Forge team were up to the challenge and the project was delivered in the professional manner we've come to expect."

Big Step Forward for Site Hoarding

We have been working closely with client Willmott Dixon on a new system of site hoarding which offers many benefits.

The system replaces the traditional timber post, rail and plywood system with plastic panels fixed to scaffold poles using purpose made clips. The system is quicker to install, can be fully dismantled with no waste and can be re used several times on future schemes. Although all timber supplied in our traditional hoarding is FSC certified, dismantling results in much waste and requires redecoration to maintain a fresh appearance when re used. The new system can incorporate our surface mounted concrete ballast blocks which we pioneered seven years ago and have become a great success. Although more expensive initially, the new system is cost effective due to its durability and through our 'buy back' offer. Plastic panels can be suppied in the required corporate colours or in white which is made using 100% recycled material such as old window frames.

Nick Corrigan, Director of Willmott Dixon is enthusiastic about the system..

"On our Ingleby Barwick Leisure Centre project we asked Middleton Forge to install their new hoarding system. The system is superior to timber both in terms of its sharp, professional appearance and the ease with which it can be cleaned to maintain this look. As a company we are keen to minimise waste and encourage such innovations to help us achieve this. We have worked with Middleton Forge for many years and take advantage of their offer to buy back and store salvaged hoarding materials for re use. Their new system will exploit this facility further resulting in less waste and ultimately lower costs. It addition to the environmental benefits the system also eliminates the need to break ground and the risks of encountering buried services"
